Explore: Travel Quote Reflections

So my bestest roomie in the whole world (sorry Jimmy) gave me an awesome travel journal for my birthday. It has random travel and adventure quotes throughout the entire thing and yesterday I was inspired to respond to one. I figured I might wish to do this more often. Feel free to join me :)

  1. "As you grow older, you'll find that the only things you regret are the things you didn't do." - Zachary Scott

Oh regrets...I don't think I have too many of those in my 21 years thus far -- plenty of mistakes, no regrets. All of my life experiences have led me to the place I am today, surrounded by love. That's the one thing that I know I will miss most. It's a big "one thing" though. I am in such a healthy place right now as far as my relationships with my friends and family go. I care deeply about many people, and feel the return in mounds.

It seems like you should also not regret the things you didn't do, because of the things you did that replaced them!

  2. "Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment" - Ralph Waldo Emerson

We had just eaten our first breakfast in Senegal and wanted to find an internet cafe to contact our families. We didn't have a map (which we found out later would not have helped in this new, oral culture), we had no idea where we were in relation to anything, and weren't sure of the procedure for getting back into the building. So, we were trying to build up some courage/appoint someone to use their French skills. We were all nervous (probably enhanced by the group dynamic) and just standing around looking like idiots. Just as we were almost ready to give up and just hide out in our rooms for the remaining 24 hours, Jenna tried to ask if we needed a key to get back into the building. The woman brought us back a key, which I still have no idea what it is for because it definitely does not open the front door. Then I asked here if there was an internet cafe nearby. She literally walked us about 10 feet nextdoor. Ha! We all laughed at ourselves for being so ridiculous. It was a very good study abroad lesson...just do it! Take a risk. Who cares? You're only foolish if you don't.

  4. "...if you are wise and know the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in which the gods may offer it." - Freya Stark

Throughout much of my journaling I feel the urge to express my acknowledgment and excitement for the unknown. "Je ne sais rien!" has been my most common french phrase amongst my group. We really are clueless from moment to moment, but there is something extremely exhilerating about that reality. Much is unkonw, but I will embrace whatever comes!
